Mission Statement
The Environmental Services Department provides curbside removal and disposal of tree limbs, bagged leaves, straw and other yard wastes for all residences within the City Limits. In most cases, the yard wastes are picked up twice monthly. Citizens wanting to use this service must place yard wastes, less than 6 inches in diameter, near the edge of the road in an area away from overhead utility lines. It is not necessary to call the Department for pickup.
The Department manages and operates the North Central Inert Landfill at 1507 North Central Avenue. The landfill's operating hours are 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The landfill is also open on the second Saturday of each month from 7:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. The landfill is permitted to accept stumps, limbs, tires, leaves, pallets, cloth scraps (and similar type material), and construction debris. Citizens living within the Alexander City limits can carry wastes to the landfill at no cost; however, proof of residency (utility bill showing address) and current identification must be presented at the gate.
The Environmental Services Department also manages the recycling program at 824 Railey Road. The Department receives recyclables such as cardboard, #1 and #2 plastic, newsprint, computer paper, aluminum cans and scrap iron during the same operation hours as the landfill.
The Department also removes and disposes of dead animals from the road and right-of-way. Pickup of dead animals in the road can be called in to the Public Works Department.
